Live cinema has a transmission problem. The form demands real footage, shot live, with cameras that can move freely through a space — but the infrastructure designed for live broadcast was built for television crews with a truck parked outside, not for two-person teams moving through a school corridor at night or covering multiple stages simultaneously at a film festival.
LiveU changed that for us. When we came to them with two productions back-to-back — the Live Film Creative Lab at St. Kilda Film Festival and Turn Around at South Side Festival — and explained what we were trying to do, they agreed to sponsor both shoots with two LU600 backpacks. That equipment made both productions possible in the form they took.

For both productions, we ran an identical core transmission architecture. Two Sony FX3 cameras fed into two LiveU LU600 backpacks on the field — roaming operators carrying full broadcast-grade cellular transmission on their backs, untethered from any fixed network infrastructure in the venue.
Back at the edit station, a Peplink router handled network aggregation and provided the stable, prioritised data path the LU600 feeds needed to arrive cleanly. A Shuttle Server sat between the LiveU receivers and the live edit station — ingesting the decoded streams and distributing them to the switcher. The editor cuts the film live from whatever the cameras find.
That's the whole chain. No satellite dish. No broadcast truck. No fibre run through a venue. Two people carrying backpacks, a Peplink on a table, and a server that turns cellular signal into a live film.
Technical Setup — Both Shoots
LiveU Central was the layer we hadn't expected to rely on as heavily as we did. Managing two active LU600 units simultaneously — across different zones, different cellular environments, and with an editor making live cuts — means you need real-time visibility into both streams at once. LiveU Central gave us that: signal strength per bonded modem, latency, bitrate, battery state, all accessible from the edit position without breaking workflow. When one unit hit a weak zone between St. Kilda's outdoor stages, we saw it coming with enough warning to hold the cut. Without Central, we would have been cutting blind.
St. Kilda Film Festival — Live Film Creative Lab
The Live Film Creative Lab at St. Kilda Film Festival put four filmmaking teams into a two-day intensive, each devising and performing a short live-broadcast film. The format required camera operators to cover multiple narrative spaces simultaneously — outdoor festival grounds, a defined performance area, and audience-adjacent zones — with a live editor cutting between both feeds in real time to produce a continuous 40-minute broadcast.
Festival environments are hostile to fixed transmission infrastructure. Competing wireless networks, RF congestion from other festival production, and the unpredictable movement of large crowds all degrade signal quality. The LU600 backpacks bonded across multiple cellular networks simultaneously, which meant that what would have been a catastrophic signal drop on a single-modem system became a managed quality reduction — visible in monitoring, recoverable before it reached the output.
South Side Festival — Turn Around
Turn Around was a site-specific live cinema commission for the South Side Festival (Frankston City Council), made with 15 students from Frankston High School. The premise required camera operators to move freely through Frankston High School — corridors, stairwells, outdoor areas around the Frankston Arts Centre — while the audience watched a live feed inside Cube 37, a venue physically separated from the shoot location.
That spatial gap is exactly the problem the LU600 was designed to solve. There was no cabling between the school and the theatre. The signal went from camera to backpack, via cellular to LiveU Central, decoded at the Shuttle Server, and out to the edit station and projection in Cube 37 — live, in real time, across a gap that would have been impassable with conventional wired infrastructure. The audience experienced the distance as a live, breathing presence. They felt the gap between where the cameras were and where they were sitting. That tension was part of the work.
What This Changes
The LU600 backpack is not a workaround for productions that can't afford broadcast infrastructure. It is broadcast infrastructure — cellular-bonded, managed, monitored, and reliable enough to carry a live film in front of an audience where failure is not an option. The cost of a LiveU backpack in Australia has historically put it out of reach for smaller live cinema productions. The sponsorship from LiveU let us prove what the form can do at that level of transmission quality.
